Who, in either case, were subjected to abuse, cruelty and neglect based on rather spiteful and groundless delusions about "the need to save the Good Taxpayers from themselves" (as in having to "suffer needlessly" for the care of the less fortunate among us, as if expecting the Church or even mutual self help to provide better social welfare services to such in need), especially where recourse to lies, trick or deception was deemed necessary in the Crown's name to justify such placements as nowadays would be deemed illegal.
(For his part, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown is expected to offer like apologies within measurable distance.)
And is it any wonder that certain White Christian Supremacists have this secret desire of "evacuating" as "refugees" (which may not exactly be the case in fact) all remaining specimens of Afrikanerdom from South Africa as "vlugtelinge in die vrees van vervolging deur 'n Kommunistiese-beïnvloed-regime" (or so the official patsy in Afrikaans would have it), and scaring up funds from Right-Thinking White Christian Americans per a "United Campaign" with connexions to bigot groups (and reminding them to "give till it hurts") until those involved decide to reallocate funds raised to "more urgent needs" @ the last minute?

By this analogy, Your Correspondent has to wonder if the GOP is using Sarah Palin as an ur-Apple of Discord with an eye towards maintaining loyalty and orthodoxy among the rank-and-file membership lest there be another Winona Speech (as it were) leaving GOP in such discord that the Democrats exploit same for political ends, with success. (In fact, the fallout from the Winona Speech, which had then-President William Howard Taft defending just-legislated tariff reforms, howbeit flawed and then some, as the best tariff legislation ever enacted, was a factor oft cited by historians in explaining how Democrat Woodrow Wilson was able to win the Presidency in 1912; its fallout opened all the more a wedge between the Stalwart and Progressive factions as threatened GOP unity.)
